Maxamind: Scaling real-time multiplayer gaming on AWS

Core5 re-architected Maxamind's gaming platform on AWS to cut latency, scale to millions of players and lower infrastructure cost.

Maxamind case study

Overview

Executive summary

Maxamind is a global online gaming company specialising in real-time multiplayer games. As its player base grew into the millions, its legacy on-premise infrastructure couldn't keep up. AWS Advanced Tier Partner Core5 designed an AWS-based solution for performance, scalability and cost efficiency.

The challenge

What they were up against

  • Legacy on-premise infrastructure caused latency during peak hours and scaled slowly when activity spiked.
  • Server instability and prolonged downtime put the player experience at risk.
  • Rising maintenance costs were cutting into margins and long-term sustainability.

Our solution

How Core5 approached it

  • Isolated all gaming services inside a secure Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).
  • Ran gaming, API and payment servers in public subnets with Elastic IPs and fast Amazon EBS storage.
  • Distributed player traffic across servers with an Application Load Balancer.
  • Directed users to the nearest server with low latency using Amazon Route 53.
  • Stored game assets, updates and backups in Amazon S3 for secure global access.
